Visakhapatnam Port Authority High Jumps to 19th in Global Container Port Performance Index

Creating a milestone, the Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) has ascended by 102 points to the 19th position in the prestigious Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) for 2023. This notable advancement, as recognized by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, marks a substantial leap from its previous ranking of 122 in the CPPI for 2022.

The dramatic improvement in VPA’s ranking is a testament to the port’s successful implementation of comprehensive strategic initiatives to boost operational efficiency. Under the leadership of a proactive management team, VPA has invested heavily in advanced technologies and adopted best practices in port management. These efforts have not only enhanced the port’s performance metrics but have also solidified its standing within the highly competitive global maritime industry.

In this financial year, the port has set an ambitious target of 90 MTPA cargo and one million tree plantation drive, balancing the cargo growth and environment sustainability. At the same time, the port is giving importance to human resource development by providing training and skill development to port employees and local youth.

VPA’s rise in the rankings is attributed to several key factors including enhanced operational efficiency (reducing TATs), investment in advanced technologies (from automated cargo handling systems to state-of-the-art surveillance and monitoring tools), and adopting international best practices.

The improved CPPI ranking has broader implications beyond operational metrics and is expected to attract more business, fostering increased trade volumes and contributing to the economic development of the region.

Looking ahead, the Visakhapatnam Port Authority is poised to build on this momentum. With plans for further infrastructural developments and continued investment in technology, VPA aims to sustain and enhance its performance. The port’s upward trajectory is not only a win for its management and staff but also a promising sign for stakeholders and the broader maritime community.
