Uttar Pradesh: New bonded warehouses and wholesale godowns for liquor businesses

The Excise Department of Uttar Pradesh has initiated the process of opening bonded warehouses and wholesale godowns for liquor businesses. This comes within a week of the launch of the state government’s new excise policy.

While existing owners of warehouses and wholesale godowns can renew their licenses, the excise department gives options to new entrepreneurs and businessmen interested in entering into the liquor business. A bonded warehouse is a necessity for the storage of foreign liquor and beer brands that are manufactured in other states and transported in UP. The inventory tracking of such stock happens from bonded warehouses to wholesale godowns before it finally reaches the retail stores.

The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet recently cleared a new excise policy for 2023-24, intending to provide stability to the liquor business and earn maximum revenue while making the policy attractive. Under the new excise policy, the UP government aims to raise INR 45,000 crore in revenue from liquor.

The state has increased the license fee of foreign liquor, beer, bhang, and model shop by 10%, along with registrations and renewal fees of master warehouses and increased license fees for hotels/restaurants and club bars selling liquor within 5 km of Lucknow Municipal Corporation.
