UltraTech Cement Aims for 85% Green Energy Share in Total Energy Mix by 2030

In a significant stride towards sustainability, UltraTech Cement Limited, India’s leading cement and Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC) company, has unveiled ambitious plans to elevate the overall share of green energy in its total energy mix to an impressive 85% by 2030. This bold commitment underscores the company’s dedication to spearheading a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future for the cement industry.

As of now, UltraTech has set an interim target, aiming to surge its green energy share threefold from the current 22% to an impressive 60% by the fiscal year 2026. Mr. K C Jhanwar, the Managing Director of UltraTech Cement Limited, expressed his vision for a cleaner tomorrow, stating, “Green energy is a key enabler of decarbonization. We have been constantly scaling up our green energy mix in our total power requirement over the years, which is a testament to our commitment towards a clean and green tomorrow.”

One of the pivotal elements of UltraTech’s strategy involves meeting 100% of its electricity requirements through renewable sources by 2050, aligning with its RE100 commitment. As a member of EP100, the company is also steadfast in its commitment to double its energy productivity. Currently boasting 691 MW of green energy capacity, comprising 262 MW of Waste Heat Recovery Systems (WHRS) installed capacity and 429 MW of contracted renewable energy, UltraTech has already carved out a notable 22% of its energy requirements from sustainable sources.

To achieve these targets, UltraTech has implemented a series of initiatives, including a focus on renewable energy sources and an expansion of Waste Heat Recovery Systems. The company has explicitly declared its intention not to invest further in thermal power capacity, aligning with its broader objective to diminish dependence on fossil fuels and amplify the utilization of green energy.

Green Manufacturing Initiatives

Given the inherent challenges of decarbonizing the cement sector, UltraTech is harnessing cutting-edge technology to accelerate the reduction of its carbon footprint in manufacturing operations. A noteworthy collaboration with Coolbrook, a Finland-based transformative technology and engineering company, exemplifies this commitment. UltraTech is actively involved in the implementation of Coolbrook’s RotoDynamic Heater™ (RDH) technology in one of its cement manufacturing units. This groundbreaking technology leverages electrification from renewable sources to replace fossil fuels in the heating processes of cement production, thereby expediting the decarbonization of this critical industrial process. UltraTech is also exploring other innovative technologies such as Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) in collaboration with startup technology companies like CarbonOrO, Coomtech, and Fortera.

Sustainable Transport Initiatives

Acknowledging the significant carbon footprint associated with logistics in the cement industry, UltraTech is not only focused on reducing its own operational carbon emissions but is also actively collaborating with partners to drive decarbonization across its value chain. In a pioneering move, the company has introduced ‘Green Logistics’ through the deployment of CNG/LNG trucks. UltraTech is committed to deploying 500 electric trucks and adding 1000 CNG/LNG vehicles in the 40-tonne category in its operations by June 2025, aligning with the Government of India’s eFAST initiative.

Having introduced CNG vehicles in 2021 and LNG vehicles in 2022, UltraTech currently operates more than 390 CNG trucks and 50 LNG trucks across 17 manufacturing units. The company aims to rapidly scale up this initiative to other manufacturing locations, showcasing a proactive approach towards sustainable transport.

In conclusion, UltraTech Cement’s commitment to increasing its green energy share is a beacon in the industry’s journey towards sustainability. By embracing innovative technologies and forging collaborations, UltraTech is not only transforming its own operations but also setting a commendable precedent for the broader cement industry, reaffirming its position as a leader in the pursuit of a cleaner and greener future.
