Thiruvananthapuram International Airport has recorded a 41% year-on-year increase in domestic cargo handling during the first five months of FY2026–27, reflecting growing demand for air freight from Kerala and beyond. The airport’s domestic cargo division currently handles an average of 350 metric tonnes per month.
The airport handles a diverse mix of outbound cargo, including flowers, chilled and ornamental fish, medical kits, courier consignments, postal mail and rubber stems. Rubber stems are transported from Kerala to several northeastern states, while ornamental fish are shipped to destinations such as Delhi, Agra and Jammu.
Inbound cargo includes medicines, vaccines, medical equipment, mobile phones, meat products, automobile parts, courier consignments, postal mail and lenses, among other essential commodities. The airport’s air cargo network plays an important role in the movement of time-sensitive shipments, particularly those linked to healthcare, agriculture and fisheries.
The growing cargo activity comes as Vizhinjam International Seaport expands its role as an international maritime gateway following the commencement of full-fledged EXIM operations. According to airport authorities, the airport’s proximity to Vizhinjam creates an opportunity to develop stronger air-sea cargo connectivity, allowing businesses to select the most efficient transport mode based on cargo characteristics, urgency and destination.
With domestic air cargo volumes gaining momentum and Vizhinjam strengthening Kerala’s maritime connectivity, Thiruvananthapuram is emerging as a potential multimodal logistics hub. Greater integration between the airport and seaport could further strengthen the region’s position in national and international supply chains.
