As the logistics industry faces mounting pressure to reduce its carbon footprint, leading global players are stepping up their sustainability commitments. DB Schenker, a pioneer in green logistics, is making significant strides toward carbon neutrality, particularly in its land transport operations. In an exclusive conversation with Logistics Insider, Abhishek Vashisht, Director – Land Transport, Indian Subcontinent, DB Schenker, delves into the company’s sustainability roadmap, the integration of electric heavy-duty trucks, and the challenges of scaling sustainable logistics solutions. He also sheds light on how DB Schenker is leveraging technology, innovation, and strategic expansion to redefine the future of land transportation in India and beyond.
Can you provide an overview of DB Schenker’s sustainability goals and how they align with global sustainability initiatives, such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?
DB Schenker is deeply committed to sustainability as a core value and operational principle. Our goals are intrinsically aligned with global sustainability initiatives, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We focus on SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action), aiming to lead the transition towards sustainable logistics solutions. This is complemented by investments in renewable energy, energy-efficient infrastructure, and emission reducing transportation technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and foster sustainable growth across the supply chain.
How does DB Schenker integrate sustainability into its core business operations and decision-making processes?
Sustainability is embedded into every aspect of our business. From deploying electric vehicles to enhancing the energy efficiency of our warehouses, we ensure that our operations reflect environmental stewardship. Decision-making at DB Schenker incorporates sustainability assessments, aligning projects with long-term environmental and social goals. For example, in India, we have introduced heavy-duty electric trucks for intra-city logistics to decarbonize transport. Additionally, we partner with stakeholders across the value chain to create resilient, sustainable logistics solutions that drive both economic and environmental value.
DB Schenker’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality for intra-city deliveries by 2030 is ambitious. How does the recently introduced heavy-duty electric truck align with this vision?
The launch of heavy-duty electric trucks in India marks a significant step toward achieving our carbon neutrality goal. These vehicles are purpose-built for first-mile and last-mile deliveries within our Less-than-Truckload (LTL) network, ensuring minimal emissions while maintaining operational efficiency. The deployment of these trucks in Chennai, with plans to expand to tier-1 cities, showcases our strategy of early adoption and scalable deployment of emission reducing technologies.
What unique features of the 20’ and 24’ heavy-duty electric trucks make them well-suited for operations in India’s logistics landscape?
Our heavy-duty electric trucks are tailored to meet the unique demands of India’s logistics landscape. With a planned capacity of 7 MT and suitability for first mile and last-mile operations, these trucks address the growing need for efficient intra-city deliveries. Their design ensures compatibility with both FTL and LTL services, enhancing flexibility. The vehicles are also equipped to navigate urban congestion and infrastructure constraints, making them an ideal choice for India’s dynamic logistics environment. This innovation reflects our commitment to operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.
What are the biggest challenges DB Schenker faces in implementing and scaling sustainable practices?
Scaling sustainable practices in logistics requires overcoming challenges such as infrastructure readiness, high initial costs, and technological adaptation. For instance, the deployment of electric vehicles necessitates extensive charging infrastructure, which is still developing in many regions. Moreover, balancing cost-efficiency with sustainability goals in a highly competitive market is a complex task. However, through partnerships, innovation, and phased implementation strategies, DB Schenker is actively addressing these challenges.
