Robots in warehouses: For the greater good?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

With the world pacing towards strategic change, leaving behind the traditional know-how of running businesses, the rise of technology especially robotics has been witnessed in every domain of logistics, and warehouse operations are at the top of the list.

‘Robots in Warehouse’ – This is a concept that is much dominated by sceptics worried about the high investments and maintenance. This article brings an objective viewpoint with hopes to highlight the greater good of investments into robotics in warehousing.

To ensure efficient order fulfilment at warehouses, numerous processes need to be carried out steadily for which tech-savvy companies are leveraging warehouse robotics making the warehousing industry a major contributor to the growing demand for robotics.

Leveraging warehouse robotics not only improves order fulfilment but also better manage inventory while keeping one ahead of the competition.

In addition, it cuts down the time and resources spent on retrieving and transporting items around the warehouse floor, allowing human workers to concentrate on the more complicated processes like packing and shipping orders.

Along with the obvious benefits of deploying robots in the warehouse such as the increased efficiency and lower cost, many additional benefits come along.

Bring in accuracy in inventory management

Investing in warehouse robotics results in increased productivity and accuracy in inventory management as it almost eliminates human errors, which can be quite costly for businesses and can lead to lower customer satisfaction.

Processes like handling, picking, sorting, and replenishment of products are done with precision with the help of automation, thus guaranteeing high levels of accuracy in order fulfilment and warehousing operations.

The reduced physical and mental strain on human workers

Implementing robots in warehousing operations take on the time-consuming, stressful, and dangerous aspects of the job, such as transporting inventory and retrieving inventory from heights of the hands of the workers. This reduces the risk of serious accidents and improves workers’ health and safety. Reducing the strain also increases in a boost up morale, which inlead boosts productivity and creates a better work environment.

Increase productivity and automate tedious processes

The tedious, repetitive tasks can be better handled with robots that have been designed to handle routine functions while maintaining long-term precision. They reduce the error rates and increase productivity and execution of newer operations without affecting quality with automated workers in place.

Looking at the advantages of implementing robotics into warehouse operations 4 major types of robots are being used by companies:

  • Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV)- helps transport the products or materials from one place to another by using magnetic stripes, sensors, or track embedded in your warehouse.
  •  Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR)-modified AGV loaded with warehouse maps and the location of all the inventory in it.
  • Cobots- semi-autonomous mobile robots that can move around in the warehouse with their human pickers.
  • Automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS)- An automated technology used in the warehouse for the speedy storing and retrieving of goods.

The robotization of operations opens up great opportunities for businesses to respond to the current and future challenges posed by logistics. It automates the existing operations and, at the same time, builds new operating patterns adapted to robots. Answering the issues of productivity, security, and efficiency, robotics give a real chance to businesses looking to reinvent their organization.
