In an ever-evolving retail landscape, Jumbotail has emerged as a transformative force, redefining traditional retail through its innovative supply chain strategies. By empowering Kirana stores— India’s retail backbone— Jumbotail is bridging critical gaps in procurement, delivery, and credit access, ensuring that small retailers can thrive in a competitive market. Dive into Jumbotail’s transformative journey, as Aman Agrawal, President for Supply Chain at Jumbotail discusses how the company is reshaping the future of retail by overcoming supply chain challenges, leveraging advanced technology, and empowering Kiranas to meet the evolving demands of Indian consumers.
What are the guiding principles of Jumbotail’s supply chain strategy, and how do they align with the company’s mission to modernise traditional retail?
Jumbotail’s supply chain strategy emphasizes a customerfirst approach, addressing key challenges faced by Kirana store owners, including the lack of doorstep delivery, limited access to organized credit and necessity to buy larger quantity of products. To overcome these issues, we have implemented solutions such as nextday delivery, flexibility to order lower seamless payment experience, and digital credit access. These innovations allow store owners to dedicate their time more on their customers, rather than on procurement operations.
Moreover use of technology has been integral to achieve the customer and profitability goals. We have built a full-suite of solutions – data driven routing capabilities, internal warehouse management systems and optimization tools leveraging AI and ML to build a highly sustainable and the lowest cost structure distribution supply chain.
This approach, along with robust data-driven decisionmaking, allows us to provide an outstanding customer experience while achieving revolutionary cost efficiencies.
Tackling last-mile delivery challenges is critical in ensuring operational success. How does Jumbotail approach this to deliver timely and efficient services across diverse regions?
Last-mile delivery is one of the most critical and intricate components of any supply chain due to the sheer number of dynamic variables involved. Factors such as traffic conditions, weather changes, and customer behaviour evolve almost in real-time, making this stage particularly challenging.
To address these complexities, Jumbotail has made significant investments in data-driven route optimization. Our systems are designed to adapt to local nuances, incorporating variables like roadblocks and vehicle restrictions directly into routing algorithms. Additionally, we maintain real-time visibility of delivery movements across the country, enabling the swift detection and resolution of challenges as they arise. With these capabilities, we provide Kirana stores with a high level of delivery predictability by ensuring a two-hour delivery slot.
We also leverage network design and grid-based location intelligence solutions to position our warehouses near demand centres strategically. This approach ensures that we serve only areas where we can meet demand profitably.
Planning for variations in demand and unexpected dips in supply is an ongoing activity, with preparations spanning the next day, upcoming weeks, and months. Our capacity and promise algorithms process demand and supply signals to make accurate customer commitments, ensuring that fill rates are consistently maintained without compromise.
How is Jumbotail integrating eco-friendly practices like green logistics or waste reduction into its operations?
Jumbotail’s distribution and supply chain is designed to minimize the effort right from production to consumption which has a massive impact on energy consumption. While the world is moving towards single packet last-mile orders – we are backing Kirana stores which act as great aggregators of demand and save a lot of last-mile efforts. Leveraging AI and ML for demand forecasting, route planning, warehouse and space optimization along with doing full-truck load milk runs ensures that effort per unit of goods delivered is further minimized.
Our distribution network also works on reusable packaging, addressing one of the primary sources of waste in traditional supply chains. The limited waste generated—mainly cartons from bulk-breaking operations—is recycled and repurposed for use in other industries, reinforcing our commitment to sustainability.
In line with our sustainability goals, we are also exploring the integration of electric vehicles (EVs) into our delivery fleet. EVs are proving to be increasingly viable in densely populated areas with limited accessibility. As EV infrastructure and payload capacities continue to improve, we foresee faster electrification in our last mile fleet.
Through these initiatives, Jumbotail is embedding eco-friendly practices into our logistics and operations. By reducing our environmental footprint, we are not only setting the foundation for a more sustainable future but also aligning with our mission to meet the evolving demands of e-commerce while promoting responsible business practices.
