Railways freight loading rises by 55 mt in current fiscal year

Freight earning is expected to be 1.43 lakh crore in 2019-20

Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Railways and Coal, released a booklet highlighting the achievements and targets completed by the Railways and Coal Ministries during the past five years in the presence of other senior officials of both the ministeries here in Delhi on Friday.

“Indian Railways expects to load 1,216 million tonnes (mt) of goods in the current fiscal year (2018-19) and this capacity is approximately 55 mt more than the freight loaded by the Railways in the previous fiscal year,” said VK Yadav, Chairman, Railway Board. In the extra freight of 55 mt, the biggest share came from coal and coke till February 2019.

Freight earning of Indian Railways is showing an upward trend and it is expected to be about Rs. 1.43 lakh cr in BE 2019-20. The first section of both, Western Freight Corridor (Rewari to Madar – 200 Kms) and Eastern Freight Corridor (Bhadan to Khurja – 200 Kms) of the ambitious project of Dedicated Freight Corridor have also been completed by the Indian Railways.
