Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the new terminal building at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI) in Guwahati, Assam, on Saturday, December 20, 2025, marking a key milestone in the region’s infrastructure development.
The inauguration will take place during a two-day official visit to Assam, where the prime minister will also lay foundation stones for several strategic projects and engage with public gatherings. In a post on X, Prime Minister Modi described the new airport terminal as a “major boost to Assam’s infrastructure,” noting its potential to improve both quality of life and economic activity across the state.
The ₹4,000 crore terminal, billed as India’s first nature-themed airport terminal, reflects an architectural design inspired by the biodiversity and cultural heritage of the North East. Its environment-centric features, including the use of indigenous materials and motifs drawn from Assam’s flora and fauna, aim to blend functionality with regional identity.
Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the importance of the project, saying the people of the state are looking forward to the enhanced connectivity and facilities the terminal promises. Officials say the expanded terminal will significantly increase passenger capacity and operational efficiency, strengthening Guwahati’s position as a key aviation hub for the entire North East.
The prime minister’s itinerary for the visit includes several flagship events. He will unveil an 80-foot statue of Assam’s first chief minister, Gopinath Bordoloi, at the airport complex and pay tribute to the martyrs of the Assam movement. On Sunday, he is expected to attend the Bhoomi Pujan (groundbreaking) of a major ammonia-urea fertiliser project in Namrup, Dibrugarh district, underscoring the government’s focus on both infrastructure and industrial development in the state.
The new terminal is positioned as a critical piece of India’s broader infrastructure push in the North East, with the potential to accelerate tourism, enhance logistics connectivity and support economic growth across the region.
