Noida International Airport (NIA) has achieved an important milestone in its cargo development plans with the successful handling of its first domestic freighter operation at the Multi-Modal Cargo Hub (MMCH) in Jewar. The achievement follows the airport’s recent entry into passenger operations and reflects its broader ambitions in the aviation and logistics sectors.
The inaugural cargo flight, operated by Afcom Holdings Ltd, arrived from Chennai on June 17 aboard a Boeing 737-800F carrying nearly 20 tonnes of freight. The consignment included perishables and precision-engineered components, demonstrating the terminal’s ability to handle a variety of cargo categories from the outset. Ground handling and cargo processing were undertaken by Air India SATS Airport Services (AISATS), which operates the airport’s cargo infrastructure.
The operation also marked the launch of AISATS’ 87-acre logistics complex, comprising an Integrated Cargo Terminal (ICT) and an Integrated Warehousing and Logistics Zone (IWLZ). Designed to support both domestic and international freight movements, the facility seeks to improve cargo flow through multimodal connectivity involving air, road and future rail networks.
According to AISATS, the complex features dedicated cargo processing areas, temperature-controlled storage, courier handling facilities, bonded warehousing and logistics park infrastructure. The terminal is expected to cater to industries including electronics, pharmaceuticals, e-commerce, perishables and manufacturing across Uttar Pradesh and the National Capital Region.
The launch is expected to strengthen North India’s air cargo ecosystem by providing an additional freight gateway for businesses in the region. Earlier this year, Afcom Holdings partnered with AISATS and Noida International Airport to develop dedicated freighter operations from Jewar and explore new domestic and international routes. Industry stakeholders believe the collaboration could enhance connectivity between manufacturing centres in northern India and overseas markets.
The cargo facility forms part of the airport’s long-term logistics strategy. In its initial phase, it is expected to handle around 250,000 metric tonnes of cargo annually, with scope for further expansion as demand increases. AISATS has also outlined plans for additional investments in warehousing and value-added logistics services, reinforcing the airport’s goal of becoming a major cargo and distribution hub in North India.
