A survey of 822 business executives involved in their organization’s generative AI strategy revealed that 81% of supply chain executives intend to leverage the technology to trim headcounts by 2025.

Gartner urges supply chain leaders to temper their expectations regarding labor cost reduction and instead focus on empowering their existing workforce for heightened productivity. According to Sam Berndt, senior research director at Gartner’s supply chain practice, “Gen AI should be an opportunity for chief supply chain officers to make good on many of their talent aspirations, including freeing their teams up for higher-value work and attracting top-tier technical talent.”

Crucially, transparency emerges as a cornerstone for navigating this transformative terrain. Supply chain leaders are advised to communicate openly about their plans for generative AI to dispel unfounded anxieties and foster an environment of trust. Berndt emphasizes, “Even a skeptical CSCO with minimal plans for Gen AI should provide clear communications about the organization’s plans for the technology and how it will affect the future of work.”

Moreover, the onus lies on leaders to identify diverse use cases for generative AI beyond conventional applications like chatbots. By fostering a culture of experimentation, organizations can discern new roles necessitated by this technology and pivot accordingly. Equally important is the imperative to equip employees with the requisite skills to engage with generative AI, capitalizing on the prevailing interest in cultivating proficiency in this domain.
