Navi Mumbai International Airport to Begin Operations on December 25, Boosting Cargo and Connectivity

Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) at Ulwe in Raigad district will commence commercial operations on December 25, marking a major expansion of aviation and logistics capacity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). While the airport is expected to ease passenger congestion at the existing Mumbai airport, it is also being positioned as a critical cargo and logistics gateway to support trade and industrial growth.

In its first phase, NMIA will handle 0.5 million tonnes (MT) of cargo annually. This capacity will be scaled up to 3.25 MT in the final phase, placing it among India’s largest air cargo hubs. According to officials, the expanded cargo handling capability is aimed at supporting sectors such as pharmaceuticals, perishables, manufacturing exports, and other time-sensitive shipments.

The greenfield airport is being developed by Navi Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (NMIAL), a special purpose vehicle formed by Mumbai International Airport Private Limited (MIAL) and the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO). NMIAL is responsible for the development, construction, operation, and maintenance of the project.

NMIA is expected to significantly reduce pressure on the existing Mumbai airport, which is operating near full capacity. Once operational, it will serve as the region’s second aviation gateway, catering to both domestic and international flights. Airlines are expected to begin operations in phases following the launch.

The airport features modern infrastructure designed to improve efficiency in passenger and cargo operations. Automated systems for check-in, security, and baggage handling have been integrated to reduce turnaround times, while passenger facilities include lounges, retail spaces, and food outlets. Sustainability and operational efficiency have been key considerations in the airport’s design.

Located in Navi Mumbai, the airport offers strategic connectivity advantages. Road links and proposed metro connectivity are expected to improve access from key urban and industrial centres across the Mumbai–Pune corridor, strengthening its role as a regional aviation and logistics hub.

Beyond aviation, NMIA is expected to deliver broader economic benefits. Increased air capacity is likely to improve connectivity, support trade flows, and generate employment across logistics, hospitality, and allied sectors. With commercial operations beginning on December 25, the airport is set to play a central role in strengthening the region’s transport infrastructure and supporting long-term economic growth.
