The electric locomotive manufacturing unit in Dahod, Gujarat, is set to commence production of high-speed freight train engines within the next three years, positioning India to export these locomotives, according to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
During a recent visit to the Dahod facility, Minister Vaishnaw inspected the prototype of the 9000 horsepower (HP) WAG locomotive, which is among the most powerful being developed in the country. He noted that the prototype is nearly complete and is undergoing final testing phases.
The Dahod workshop has been upgraded to manufacture these high-horsepower electric locomotives in collaboration with Siemens, under the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Make for World’ initiatives. These locomotives are designed to haul loads of up to 4,500 tonnes at a maximum speed of 120 km/h, aiming to revolutionize freight movement by decongesting tracks and enhancing the average speed and loading capacity of freight trains.
Equipped with advanced features such as the Kavach safety system and regenerative braking technology, these locomotives are expected to improve energy efficiency and operational performance. The initiative is anticipated to generate over 10,000 direct and indirect jobs, contributing significantly to local employment.
The Dahod facility’s development aligns with India’s broader goals of enhancing its manufacturing capabilities and establishing a presence in the global locomotive market. The production of these advanced locomotives is expected to commence in the coming months, with export activities projected to begin within the next three years.
