Deendayal Port Authority has crossed the 50 million metric tonnes (MMT) cargo handling mark on July 15, emerging as the fastest among India’s major ports to achieve the milestone in the current financial year 2026–27.
The Gujarat-based port reached the benchmark 19 days earlier than last year, when it had crossed 50 MMT on August 3, 2025. The accelerated performance highlights consistent growth backed by improved operational efficiency, robust infrastructure and streamlined logistics operations.
Chairman Sushil Kumar Singh credited the achievement to the collective efforts of stakeholders, noting that the milestone reinforces the port’s standing as the country’s leading major port.
Situated in the Kutch district along the Gulf of Kutch, Kandla has maintained strong momentum in recent months. In June, it set a national record by handling 7.78 lakh tonnes of cargo in a single day—the highest ever throughput recorded by any Indian port within 24 hours.
Growth across key cargo segments, including fertilisers, liquid bulk and containers, has further supported overall volumes. Improved vessel turnaround times and closer coordination with stakeholders have also contributed to the port’s performance.
With these gains, Kandla continues to play a vital role in India’s maritime trade, serving as a key gateway for cargo movement across the northern and western hinterlands.
