India’s second largest port, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has a turn around time of only 22 hours or 0.9 days-the best for container ports globally, said the World Bank in its logistics Performance Index (LPI) report, 2023.
This has put India in the list of top performers in the Logistics Performance index.
“The World Bank data reiterates that our efficiency parameters are better than many countries as per LPI 2023 report and we as a team are committed to further reduce the logistics cost and time for the export-import trade,”
Sanjay Sethi, Chairman JNPA
JNPA has taken several measures to achieve a reduced dwell time. The operational efficiency of the terminal operator along with an efficient landside rail road connectivity, Centralised Parking Plaza (CPP), digitization of the processes, streamlining berthing and unberthing of vessels and deployment of more tugs for smooth movement of ships have all contributed to a reduced dwell time.
In 2023, JNPA handled a record 6.05 million twenty foot equivalent units (TEUs), the most ever since the port began operations almost three decades ago. The container volumes handled at the port also increased by 6.45% in FY23 from 5.68 million TEUs a year ago.
