In August, I spent five days travelling across India, visiting nine companies across three major cities. It was a fast-paced trip, but what stood out most was the sheer vibrancy of India’s business landscape.
From forward-thinking warehouse operators to bold e-commerce innovators, the appetite for advanced intralogistics solutions is not just growing, it’s accelerating.
A Strategic Hotspot for Intralogistics Growth
India’s warehousing and logistics sector is undergoing a transformation. Rising consumer demand, a thriving manufacturing base, and the boom in e-commerce are converging to create new opportunities – and new challenges – for material handling operations.
For global players like Interroll, this has made India one of the most strategically important markets in the world. Our expanding presence in Bengaluru – where last year we announced the acquisition Interroll India Pvt. Ltd, our presence on the ground which was previously independent – is a direct response to the sharp rise in demand for flexible, scalable material handling solutions.
There is an increasing need for systems that can adapt to fluctuating order volumes, optimise floor space, and improve operational efficiency.
At the same time, users are becoming increasingly aware of the productivity benefits offered by automation, and are looking for systems that make automated processes available economically.
Increasing Sophistication in the Market
The kinds of enquiries we are receiving form customers in India gives us first-hand insight into the increasing sophistication of the intralogistics market in India, as end-users are increasingly exploring the full scope of our capabilities.
For example, there is growing demand for advanced components such as drum motors, sorters, and dynamic storage solutions – each designed to enhance throughput and reliability in high-performance environments.
There is also a growing market for our modular conveyor and pallet-handling systems. This is mainly from businesses looking to meet new material-handling demands, but who need a solution that is quick and easy to design, commission and install, and then easily adapted to changing requirements once it’s up and running.
This shift is significant. It signals that Indian logistics operators are not only expanding capacity but also investing in smarter, more integrated systems to meet the demands of a fast-changing market.
What Local Equipment Production Means for Indian Customers
One of the most exciting developments for Interroll in India is the move towards local production. Since the acquisition, we have been ramping up our local production and servicing of rollers and we have recently launched local manufacture of drum motors and roller drives. We anticipate the range of hardware manufactured locally will continue to increase.
But what does this mean for customers?
It means the ability to assemble and repair equipment right here in-country, dramatically shortening lead times and improving responsiveness. It means technical support that understands local market dynamics, ensuring solutions are tailored to India’s unique needs. And most importantly, it means cost efficiency, without compromise on quality or performance.
Lakhotia Aswini, managing director at Interroll India, said: “India is at the forefront of a logistics revolution. By strengthening our production capabilities in Bengaluru, we’re not only reducing lead times for customers but also ensuring that the solutions we provide are designed with India’s specific market dynamics in mind.
“This is more than just localisation – it’s about building long-term partnerships that empower Indian businesses to grow faster, smarter, and more sustainably”.
A Future Built on Partnership
The next chapter for India’s intralogistics industry will be defined by collaboration. As operators embrace automation, data-driven optimisation, and sustainable practices, suppliers must match that ambition with innovative solutions and strong local support.
At Interroll, we are proud to be part of this journey – not just as a supplier, but as a partner helping Indian businesses unlock their full potential.
As business needs and consumer behaviour continue to evolve across India, this will need to be supported by more sophisticated and productive material handling systems. At Interroll, we’re committed to working with our partners across India to ensure we’re providing the smart solutions that will help deliver India’s ongoing economic transformation in the years ahead.
