India’s IMEEC Ambitions Drive Key Maritime Projects – Vadhavan and Tuna Tekra in Focus

In a strategic move to fortify India’s role in IMEEC, key projects such as Vadhavan and Tuna Tekra have taken center stage, as revealed by insights from the Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal. Considering that the IMEEC serves as a strategic conduit connecting India to the Middle East and Europe through advanced shipping lines, these endeavors are crucial in India’s broader plan to strengthen maritime infrastructure, fostering connectivity and aligning with the nation’s economic development goals.

In that direction, the Vadhavan and Tuna Tekra ports have emerged as focal points in the IMEEC framework, showcasing India’s unwavering commitment to robust maritime infrastructure. Sonowal’s emphasis underscores their pivotal role in optimizing logistics and trade, ultimately propelling economic growth within the maritime domain.

Vadhavan Port: A Strategic Gateway

The Vadhavan port project, strategically located and equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, is poised to become a cornerstone in India’s maritime landscape. Nestled towards the north of Mumbai along the Arabian coast, Vadhvan provides an ideal location for a port with a natural draft of 20 meters. Its proximity to Mumbai as well as Gujarat along the western coast along with established connectivity to Northern and Central India via the national railway network and NH8 add to its attractiveness as a trade gateway to the region.

Tuna Tekra: Advancing Maritime Corridor Vision

The ₹5,000-crore greenfield mega container terminal to be developed and operated by DP World, Dubai, at Tuna-Tekra, 16 km from Deendayal Port in Kandla, Gujarat, will be a game changer for the port and the entire Kutch region. The project will provide the highest revenue generation for any major port under PPP, with the royalty per 20 foot equivalent unit (TEU) exceeding ₹6,000.
