Indian Railways Sets New Records in Freight Loading

In a remarkable achievement, Indian Railways has broken its own records in freight loading, showcasing outstanding performance in January 2024. The month witnessed an unprecedented loading of 142.7 Million Tonnes, marking a significant 6.5% growth compared to the previous year. This accomplishment reaffirms Indian Railways’ pivotal role as the backbone of transportation, driving core economic activities.

Despite facing challenging adverse weather conditions, including prolonged periods of fog and a wide geographical spread, Indian Railways demonstrated resilience and efficiency in achieving this milestone. The success can be attributed to the government’s strategic vision, emphasizing substantial investments in capacity augmentation, induction of new rolling stock, and a focus on operational efficiency and business development to tap into new traffic streams.

Cumulatively, from April 2023 to January 2024, the freight loading reached an impressive 1297.38 MT, showcasing a remarkable improvement of approximately 53.92 MT compared to the same period last year. The revenue earned by Railways during this period also saw a substantial increase, reaching Rs 140623.4 Crore, a notable improvement of around Rs 5235.30 Crore compared to the previous year.

In January 2024 alone, originating freight loading touched 142.70 MT, demonstrating a commendable 6.43% improvement over January 2023. The freight revenue for January 2024 reached Rs. 15514.82 Crores, showcasing a 4.06% increase compared to the corresponding month in the previous year.

Indian Railways achieved significant loading figures across various commodities, including 71.45 MT in Coal, 17.01 MT in Iron Ore, 6.07 MT in Pig Iron and Finished Steel, and substantial quantities in Cement, Clinker, Foodgrains, Fertilizers, Mineral Oil, Containers, and other goods.

Adhering to the mantra, ‘Hungry For Cargo’, Indian Railways’ sustained efforts focused on enhancing the ease of doing business and improving service delivery at competitive prices. The customer-centric approach and the collaborative work of Business Development Units, supported by agile policy-making, played a crucial role in this remarkable achievement.
