G7 Summit: PM Modi’s special appearance; talks likely on trade tensions with the US

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is attending the 45th edition of G7 Summit, being held in Biarritz, France. Despite not being a member nation of the G7 group, the PM of India was personally invited by the French President Emmanuel Macron as a special guest.

Besides holding bilateral meetings with several other world leaders, the PM of India will be meeting the US President and likely to have a special talk on trade tensions between the two countries along with the ongoing internal issue of Kashmir.

Notably, India had imposed tariffs on 28 US products in retaliation for America’s refusal to exempt Delhi from higher taxes on steel and aluminium imports. Prior to this, President Trump had announced the withdrawal of India’s preferential trade treatment.

During this year’s G20 Summit in Osaka, Modi and Trump decided to reduce the increasing differences and trade tussle which ended with no major progress. Besides, a meeting was planned between Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer by the end of August.

Apart from the trade tariff conflict, the bilateral meeting between PM Modi and the US President will focus on the Kashmir issue. Trump previously, expressed his desire to ‘mediate’ the issue of Kashmir twice within a month.
