The action-packed and immensely popular Formula E series kicked off to a spectacular start at the Historical Diriyah, Saudi Arabia this Friday. It is the sixth season of the FIA Formula E championship, a motor- racing series for electrically-powered vehicles recognised by the motorsport’s governing body, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), as the highest class of competition for electric open-wheel racing cars.
The cars used in the championship were transported by reputed company Saudia Cargo for the second year in a row. 67 cars carried in four shipments totalling 375 tons departed from Milano, Italy and Doncaster, United Kingdom, to King Khalid International Airport, Riyadh.
The logistics of transporting the equipment of 10 teams to 20 races across 5 continents within a single season demands extreme care and precision. The teams use a combination of three modes of transport- road, air and water to transport their equipment and people. As all the teams are currently based in Europe, the preferred mode of travel is usually by road. For air transport, all the teams transport their equipment in their custom-made cargo crates that are specifically designed and optimized to fill the available space in the planes’ holds.
Abdul Rahman Al-Mubarak, Saudia Cargo’s Chief Commercial Officer, expressed the care undertaken to transport all of the Formula E cars successfully. “Saudia Cargo team exercised extreme care in the ground-handling operations, and coordinated the entire process with the organizers of the Championship”, Al-Mubarak stressed.
Saudia Cargo is a known supporter of events across the globe, pertaining to sports, entertainment and culture, mobilizing its logistics capabilities to the fullest. In 2019 alone, hundreds of tons of WWE equipment, Cirque Du Soleil, artworks of international artist Leonardo Da Vinci, as well as the Discovery Exhibition space parts were transported during Jeddah and Riyadh seasons.
