In an endeavour to boost electronic toll collection, the Central government has reached a decision to offer FASTags free of charge for a 15-day period, starting from February 15.

“In order to further increase digital collection of user fee via FASTag at NH fee plazas, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to waive off the FASTag cost of ₹100 for NHAI FASTag between February 15 and 29, 2020,” the government issued a statement.

This has been done to augment revenue collection and increase the digital collection of user fee via FASTag at NH fee plazas.

With this move, vehicle owners can visit any authorised physical point-of-sale locations with a valid Registration Certificate (RC) of the vehicle to get an NHAI FASTag free of cost. However, the security deposit and minimum balance amount applicable for the FASTag wallet shall remain unchanged, the government clarified.

NHAI FASTag can be purchased from all NH fee plazas, RTOs, Common Service Centres, transport hubs, petrol pumps, etc.

In order to look for the nearest NHAI FASTag point-of-sale location, one may download the MyFASTag App, or visit www.ihmcl.com . One can also call on 1033 for any assistance regarding FASTags, which is the NH Helpline number.

FASTag is an RFID based electronic toll connection device installed in the vehicle to enable drivers to drive through toll plazas without having to stop. FASTag is attached to the windscreen to enable direct toll payments while the vehicle is moving. The toll fare is deducted from the bank account linked to FASTag.  Over 1 crore FASTags have been issued till December 2019.

NHAI had earlier announced for Free NHAI FASTag from 22 Nov to 15 December 2019 in a bid to encourage people to adopt FASTag.
