E-way bill generation of 3.5 lakh taxpayers blocked due to skipping of GST monthly returns

In order to plug tax loopholes, the central government had blocked e-way bill generation for taxpayers who have not filed their monthly GST Return (GSTR)-3B for two consecutive months from Monday, impacting roughly 3.5 lakh GST payers, reported Business Today.

The government had rolled out the rule last month as an enforcement measure amid subdued revenue collection. Also, the taxpayers generating e-way bills on the portal were given a cautionary message about blocking of the facility.

However, the facility will be unblocked within 3 hours of payment of dues and filling of GSTR-3B.

According to the GST Network (GSTN) Data, 20.75 lakh taxpayers have not filed September and October GSTR-3B. Out of which 3.47 lakh payers (16.7 per cent) had transactions in e-way bill system for September and October 2019. Thus, these 3.47 lakh GSTINs will get impacted after the immediate blocking of e-way bill generation started on 2nd December.

Apart from this, the tax department has also cancelled the registration of taxpayers, who have not filed GSTR-3B for three consecutive months.
