Distribution Logistics Infrastructure(DLI) operated a Long-Haul Rake/Python Train with Export Laden Containers bound for Nhava Sheva via their flagship terminal ICD Borkhedi, Nagpur on 15th February 2023. The train comprised of 85 BLC wagons carrying 170 TEUs, deployed with 2 Engines, 2 Brake Vans and the Crew.
Considering that this route is one of the busiest of Indian Railways in terms of passenger traffic and movement of essential goods, this operation saved time and energy, as well as reduced the pressure on rail movement on the route. Nagpur serves as a central position to and from various zones under the Indian Railways, which also leads to shortage of locomotives and crew at most times.
Indian Railways honoured DLI’s request to give them this Python Train arrangement to clear the export laden pendency at their Terminal at Borkhedi ICD. The train will have minimum stoppage and that too at prime junctions, thereby, reducing transit time between Borkhedi ICD and Nhava Sheva. Additionally, it is a more sustainable way to transport with significantly lesser carbon emissions.
This special arrangement was offered by Indian Railways to DLI as a good gesture to explore the new opportunities of connecting hinterland ports to the gateway ports especially in the times when there is shortages of Engines and Crew in the Central Zone.
This new attempt was carried out by DLI as a preparedness measure to cater the trade when there is huge pendency of imports at the sea port and exports at their terminal in Borkhedi ICD. Nagpur trade has welcomed this initiative by DLI and praised their timely operations to handle this rake and reported this special arrangement as a path braking phenomenon.
