China and Vietnam Sign Wide-Ranging Cooperation Deals Amid Shifting Trade Landscape

China and Vietnam signed dozens of cooperation agreements during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s official visit to Hanoi, strengthening bilateral ties in areas such as supply chains, industrial production, and railway development. Footage reviewed by Reuters revealed the signing ceremony, though the specific details and financial scope of the agreements remain undisclosed.

The agreements come at a critical moment in global trade dynamics. China, Vietnam’s largest trading partner and a vital supplier of industrial materials and equipment, is facing the prospect of 145% U.S. tariffs on its exports. Meanwhile, Vietnam is actively negotiating a reduction of 46% tariffs threatened by the U.S. on its own exports.

Among the agreements observed were deals involving both nations’ trade and defense ministries, as well as their respective chambers of commerce—signaling a multi-sectoral approach to cooperation. Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son had earlier indicated that around 40 agreements were expected to be finalized during President Xi’s visit.

In an article published earlier the same day in Vietnamese state media, President Xi emphasized the need for deeper collaboration between the two Communist-led nations, particularly in trade and supply chain integration.

The visit underscores China’s strategic efforts to strengthen regional alliances amid growing economic pressures from Western markets, while also offering Vietnam an opportunity to enhance its position as a key manufacturing hub in the global supply chain.
