Automotive Supply Chains Most Vulnerable To Cyberattacks, New Report Finds

Seqrite, the business division of Quick Heal Technologies Ltd., a global cybersecurity solutions provider, has unveiled findings from its India Cyber Threat Report, highlighting the automotive supply chain as the primary target of cyberattacks.

In collaboration with Seqrite Labs, India’s premier malware analysis facility, and the Data Security Council of India (DSCI), the report sheds light on a worrying trend within the automotive sector. Despite its traditional reputation for security, the industry witnessed a notable surge in cyber threats throughout 2023. Among various sectors, it was the automotive supply chain that experienced the highest volume of attacks, surpassing even government agencies and educational institutions in terms of detections.

The contemporary automotive supply chain is a sophisticated network characterized by interconnected systems and a wide array of components and software. This intricate structure provides ample opportunities for vulnerabilities, presenting significant obstacles for cybersecurity teams.

Compounded by outdated systems and software, a lack of standardization, and inconsistencies in terminology among different companies, the cybersecurity challenges within the automotive supply chain are further magnified.

Addressing these risks requires a multi-faceted security approach. Seqrite emphasizes the need for a strategy that includes robust perimeter defenses, network segmentation, stringent authentication protocols, and continuous monitoring. Moreover, fostering a culture of cybersecurity, promoting collaboration and information exchange, adhering to regulatory frameworks, and embracing emerging technologies are essential steps in fortifying the cybersecurity posture of the automotive supply chain.
