Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a dedicated investment of ₹100 crore aimed at positioning the state as a key destination for aerospace manufacturing and Aviation Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) services, in a move that could reshape the region’s industrial landscape.
Sharing details of the initiative on LinkedIn, the Chief Minister said the investment marks more than an infrastructure push, describing it as a strategic step toward building a “future-ready industrial ecosystem” that supports high-value manufacturing, technological innovation and skilled employment.
Key Focus Areas
According to the announcement, the state government’s plan rests on several pillars:
- Development of aerospace component manufacturing capabilities within the state
- Strengthening of MRO infrastructure under the newly introduced Assam MRO Policy, 2025
- Promotion of maintenance-linked services and ancillary industries to establish a robust aerospace supply chain
- Creation of avenues for MSMEs and local enterprises to plug into India’s expanding aviation and defence manufacturing sectors
- Generation of high-skilled jobs, with Assam positioning itself as a gateway to aviation markets in Northeast India and Southeast Asia
Riding India’s Aviation Boom
The announcement comes against the backdrop of rapid growth in India’s civil aviation sector, which analysts say is driving up demand for world-class MRO facilities and domestic aerospace manufacturing capacity. The state government believes Assam’s geographic location, improving connectivity, and industry-friendly policies give it a competitive edge in tapping this emerging opportunity.
Sarma said the initiative reflects a broader vision of transforming Assam into an advanced manufacturing hub, where policy support, infrastructure development and innovation converge to draw investment and build long-term industrial capability.
“The journey towards making Assam a key contributor to India’s aerospace ambitions has begun,” the Chief Minister said, signalling further steps to follow as the state moves to operationalise the policy framework and attract manufacturers and MRO operators.
The government is expected to release further details on implementation timelines, incentive structures, and potential industry partnerships in the coming months.
