Apple Deepens Ties with China Amid Expanding Footprint in Southeast Asia and India

Carefully maneuvering between geopolitics and commerce, tech giant Apple Inc. has intensified its collaboration with China while concurrently expanding its production networks in Southeast Asia and India. This delicate dance of strategies shines light on Apple’s tightrope walk amidst the complex dynamics of global trade and political tensions.

Apple has bolstered its reliance on Chinese suppliers and manufacturing facilities, even as it reduces its dependency on suppliers from Taiwan, the United States, Japan, and South Korea. An analysis based on Apple’s latest official list of suppliers reveals a notable surge in the number of China-based suppliers, which now constitute the largest cohort in Apple’s supply chain.

Apple’s official list of suppliers, released annually, covers an exhaustive 187 companies, representing a staggering 98% of the company’s procurement for fiscal 2023. The number of Chinese suppliers has steadily risen, reaching 52 in 2023 from 48 the previous year. Simultaneously, the tally of manufacturing and development facilities in China has expanded by 10, totaling 286 establishments, encompassing both domestic and foreign entities.

This deepening collaboration with China coincides with Apple’s accelerated shift in its supply chain to Southeast Asia amidst the backdrop of the ongoing tech rivalry between the United States and China. Notably, the number of Apple suppliers operating in Vietnam surged by 40% to 35, while in Thailand, it grew by approximately a third, reaching 24. India, a burgeoning market, maintained 14 suppliers, with the notable entry of Tata Group into the list of top suppliers, supplying iPhone casings following its acquisition of an iPhone assembly plant in Bangalore.

However, this expanding footprint across Southeast Asia and India does not necessarily indicate a diminished reliance on China. Nikkei Asia’s analysis reveals that around 37% of the suppliers in Vietnam have origins in China and Hong Kong, including key players like Luxshare and Goertek, both involved in AirPods assembly, and BYD, an iPad assembler. Additionally, several Chinese companies debuted on the list of top Apple suppliers in 2023, underscoring the continued significance of China in Apple’s global supply chain.

Contrasting strategies within the tech industry are evident, with Apple’s nuanced approach juxtaposed against the moves of its American counterparts like Dell and HP. While Dell aims to phase out all China-built chips and components, and HP instructs suppliers to expand capacity in Southeast Asia and Mexico, Apple navigates a more intricate path, owing to its substantial presence in both the US and China.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has emerged as a pivotal figure in maintaining diplomatic equilibrium, engaging in high-level dialogues with Chinese officials and key suppliers during his recent visit to China. Acknowledging China’s critical role in Apple’s success, Cook emphasized the significance of the Chinese market, despite mounting geopolitical challenges.

However, Apple faces formidable competition within China, notably from Huawei, its top rival in the premium handset segment. Huawei’s recent product launches and robust performance in the Chinese market have intensified competition, pressuring Apple and other contenders.

Globally, Apple witnessed a decline in shipments in the first quarter of 2024, reflective of broader market trends. Amidst these challenges, Cook’s diplomatic overtures extended to Southeast Asia, signaling Apple’s commitment to exploring new opportunities and strengthening ties in the region.

As Apple navigates the intricate web of global supply chains and geopolitical dynamics, experts emphasize the multifaceted considerations driving its strategic decisions. Karen Ma Li-Yen, director of emerging regions collaboration at IEK Consulting, underscores the geopolitical balancing act and the allure of cost-effective solutions offered by Chinese suppliers. While Southeast Asia emerges as a promising alternative, challenges persist, particularly in India, where investment hurdles impede rapid progress.
