Amazon is sharply scaling its India strategy with a combined investment roadmap spanning e-commerce, quick commerce, and cloud infrastructure, as CEO Andy Jassy’s visit underscores the country’s central role in the company’s global growth and technology ambitions.
The company has outlined total planned investments of $48 billion in India between 2026 and 2030, combining an earlier commitment of $35 billion across business verticals with an additional $13 billion earmarked specifically for AI and cloud infrastructure expansion. This builds on more than $40 billion already invested in the country to date, taking Amazon’s cumulative India investment to over $88 billion by 2030.
AI and Cloud Take Centre Stage
A significant portion of the new capital will be directed toward expanding Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure in Mumbai and Hyderabad, strengthening data centre capacity and enabling broader access to advanced technologies. These include custom AI chips, managed AI services, developer tools, and secure cloud platforms aimed at startups, enterprises, and public sector organisations.
The move aligns with India’s accelerating demand for AI-led digital transformation and positions Amazon as a key enabler of next-generation computing infrastructure. The company has already trained more than 10 million individuals in cloud skills and plans to deepen AI adoption across small businesses and government ecosystems.
During his visit, Jassy met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, reiterating Amazon’s long-term commitment to India. He emphasised that the company’s investment priorities—AI democratisation, MSME digitisation, export enablement, and job creation—are closely aligned with the government’s vision of a “Viksit” and “Atmanirbhar” Bharat.
Quick Commerce and Logistics Expansion
Alongside its technology push, Amazon is aggressively expanding its quick commerce offering, Amazon Now, which it plans to scale to 300+ cities. The service, currently live in over 15 cities and serving more than 50 million customers, has emerged as Amazon India’s fastest-growing business, with order volumes doubling quarter-on-quarter.
To support this growth, Amazon is ramping up its physical infrastructure. The company plans to launch over 20 new fulfilment centres and more than 100 last-mile delivery stations within the year, extending faster delivery capabilities into tier 2, 3 and 4 markets.
This expansion builds on one of India’s largest integrated logistics networks, which already serves customers across all serviceable pin codes in the country. Amazon’s fulfilment strategy spans multiple delivery speeds—from minutes and same-day to next-day and standard Prime delivery—supported by a dense network of micro-fulfilment and urban distribution hubs.
Supply Chain and Ecosystem Impact
Amazon’s investment surge is expected to have far-reaching implications for India’s logistics and supply chain ecosystem. The scaling of ultra-fast delivery networks will require tighter inventory positioning, advanced demand forecasting, and increased reliance on automation and AI-driven routing systems.
The expansion is also likely to boost demand for warehousing, cold chain capabilities, and gig workforce management, while intensifying competition with players such as Blinkit, Zepto, Swiggy Instamart and Flipkart, all of whom are investing aggressively in quick commerce infrastructure.
Workforce and Social Investments
As part of its broader ecosystem push, Amazon has introduced ‘Sammaan’, a welfare programme aimed at improving the quality of life for delivery associates. Backed by a portion of a previously announced $300 million investment in operations and workforce well-being, the initiative includes scholarships for associates’ children, financial inclusion support, insurance coverage, and safety measures.
Amazon says its investments will support millions of jobs, building on the 2.8 million jobs already enabled through its India operations. The company has also facilitated over $20 billion in cumulative e-commerce exports, with a target of reaching $80 billion by 2030.
India as a Strategic Growth Engine
India is increasingly emerging as a strategic innovation hub for Amazon, particularly in high-frequency commerce and scalable digital infrastructure. Insights from its India operations—especially in quick commerce—are already being leveraged to inform global rollouts.
With a dual focus on AI infrastructure and high-speed commerce, Amazon is positioning itself at the intersection of technology and logistics transformation in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital economies.
As competition intensifies and infrastructure scales rapidly, the company’s ability to integrate technology, optimise supply chains, and maintain cost efficiencies will be critical in shaping long-term market leadership.
