88% of Vizhinjam Seaport Construction Completed, Trial Run Imminent

Over 88% of the construction of the Vizhinjam International Seaport is complete, and the first trial run of its operations is expected by the end of June, the government informed the Assembly on Tuesday.

Responding to a question from Neyyattinkara MP K. Ansalan, Ports Minister G. N. Vasavan provided a detailed progress report: 98% of dredging and reclamation work, 81% of the breakwater construction, 92% of the berth, 94% of buildings, 74% of the container yard, 91% of project equipment, including cranes, and 70% of the gate complex and road have been completed.

Last month, the Adani Group, which is constructing the port, confirmed that all necessary technical support systems and experts are in place for the trial run.

Regarding the proposed fish landing center and modernization of the existing fishing harbor, Vasavan mentioned that two to three rounds of discussions have taken place with port authorities, fisheries department officials, and trade union representatives. Another round of discussions is scheduled for Tuesday, with a final decision to be based on the outcomes of these talks.
